PAYMENTS
Stripe vs Polar
Compare the payment product, not just the logo. Polar is a merchant of record, and Stripe now also offers Managed Payments; standard Stripe products leave a different set of responsibilities with your business.
On this page
Stripe/01Stripe Managed Payments changes the merchant-of-record comparison.
02Seller eligibility and customer payment coverage are separate.
03Managed Payments has its own product and integration restrictions.
Name the commercial model
Polar describes itself as a merchant of record for digital sales. Stripe’s Managed Payments also makes Stripe the MoR, while other Stripe products leave that role with the business. Compare responsibilities at product level.
Check eligibility before features
Managed Payments has business, geography, product and integration restrictions, including no Connect platform support. Polar distinguishes customer payment coverage from seller payout eligibility. Validate the actual company and product before implementation.
Model the operating cost
Compare checkout model, subscriptions, webhooks, refunds, disputes, tax responsibilities and payout handling against your use case. Recalculate with current fee pages and your transaction mix; no universal lowest-cost claim is justified here.
A few more details
Is Stripe always only a payment processor?
No. Managed Payments is Stripe’s merchant-of-record product, with its own eligibility and integration limits.
Does accepting customers worldwide mean every seller can sign up?
No. Customer coverage and seller/payout eligibility are different checks.
