How to Compare AI Tools With One Real Task

Compare AI tools on the same task with a scorecard for output, corrections, export access and cost per completed job.

How to Compare AI Tools With One Real Task

Use the comparison scorecard to record what happens when each candidate does the same job.

Define a result you can inspect

Start with a small job from your own work: revise one email, summarize one permitted document, or produce one visual draft. Write down the input, intended audience and acceptable output before opening a tool. A long feature list cannot tell you whether a product handles that job well.

Keep the first comparison narrow. Use the same input and success criteria for each candidate, and record which plan you used. This is a method for your own evaluation, not a performance ranking of the products in our directory.

Record the work around the output

  1. Check whether the required feature is available on your actual plan.
  2. Run the same task and keep the first usable result.
  3. Record factual mistakes, missing constraints and manual edits.
  4. Try the export or handoff you need, rather than stopping at a preview.
  5. Note credits, model costs, account requirements and renewal terms.

Compare useful completion, not just generation speed. A fast answer that takes extensive correction may create more work than it saves.

Separate free software from a free workflow

A recurring free plan, a temporary trial and open-source software are different arrangements. For example, the Browser Use repository documents open-source browser agents, while its hosted services and model providers have separate costs. The Runway pricing page describes its free credits as one-time.

If the cost is unclear, record it as unknown. Do not treat a zero-dollar account as proof that the task will keep working for free.

Make the choice around a real constraint

Write a short decision: “This tool fits this task because the output is editable, the review effort is manageable and the required export is available.” Keep a fallback if those conditions change.

Use the free AI tools list to find an initial shortlist, or browse the complete directory when paid options are acceptable. Product pages explain documented features and limits; this guide explains how to evaluate them.

A scorecard for one real task

Use one copy of these fields per tool. If the task is revising a customer email, give each tool the same redacted draft and ask it to preserve the promised deadline and next action.

  • Output check. Did the result preserve the deadline, next action and facts in the draft?
  • Corrections. What did you have to rewrite, verify or remove? Record the time spent.
  • Handoff. Could you use the resulting text in your email workflow?
  • Cost. Which plan or credits did this completed task use?

For this example, choose writing tools to compare.
