AGENT SKILLS

Cursor Skills Setup for Projects and Users

A missing skill may be a scope problem, not a failed install. Cursor distinguishes repository skills, local personal skills and synced personal skills, with different behavior in Cloud Agents and automations.

01Project skills can live in .agents/skills or .cursor/skills.

02Synced personal skills do not load in automation runs.

03Portable files can still depend on client-specific tools or scripts.

Start with one practical task

Choose whether collaborators or just your own workspace need the skill. Test discovery with one task and check the active environment before relying on paths, files or local dependencies.

Choose repository or personal scope

Current docs support .agents/skills and .cursor/skills in projects, and corresponding personal directories. Compatibility paths also exist, but a host recognizing a file does not ensure its external tools or scripts work.

Account for Cloud Agents

Personal ~/.cursor/skills can be synced for Cloud Agents. The docs distinguish that sync from repository skills and say automations do not load synced personal skills. Put a shared automation workflow in the repository.

Troubleshoot the smallest missing piece

Inspect the loaded skill list, metadata, expected files and required programs. Try one bounded task and inspect its result before expanding to a broad collection. If the task runs remotely, confirm that the skill and its dependencies exist in that environment.

A few more details

Can I reuse a skill from another agent?

The open format is portable, but paths, tools, scripts and invocation behavior still need host-specific review.

Will a personal local skill automatically run in every remote environment?

No. Cursor documents separate sync and worker rules; repository skills are usually the clearer shared artifact.
