AGENT SKILLS

MCP vs Skills for Agent Workflows

A skill teaches a procedure; MCP connects the agent to a system. A database review can need both: instructions for the review and an authorized way to read the schema.

03Skills and MCP can be packaged together in a plugin.

Start with one practical task

Write down whether the agent needs repeatable instructions, a connection to an external system or both. Test the procedure on one example, then verify the external action separately with the access it needs.

The missing piece determines the choice

A task may fail because the agent lacks the procedure, because it cannot reach the required system, or because both are missing. A skill helps with reusable knowledge and steps. A connection matters when the task needs live data or an action in another system.

A skill can contain more than prose

The Agent Skills format supports SKILL.md alongside scripts, references and assets. Those resources help make a procedure repeatable. MCP defines a client-server integration through which an application discovers and uses capabilities such as external data and tools.

A database review can use both

In a schema review, a skill can describe the inspection steps, finding format and evidence required in the result. An authorized database connection supplies the schema information. Procedure and access remain separate even when they appear in the same agent workflow.

Instructions do not grant account access

Installing a workflow does not sign the agent into an external service. Authentication, permissions and tool availability belong to the connection and its host. A skill can depend on those capabilities, but its instructions cannot create access that has not been granted.

A few more details

Can a skill replace an MCP server?

A skill can describe a procedure or use packaged resources. It does not by itself replace a connection needed to reach an external system.

Can a workflow use skills and MCP together?

Yes. A skill can guide the task while MCP exposes the authorized data or tools needed to carry it out.
