Figma MCP Desktop vs Remote: Choose the Right Server

Compare desktop and remote Figma MCP by seat, file context and canvas access before configuring your client.

When should you choose desktop or remote Figma MCP?

Start with Figma’s recommended remote server for the general connection. The desktop server is an option when you work in the desktop app and have the required seat. It runs locally and the official desktop docs exclude writing to the canvas and sending UI to Figma.

  • Check which server and tools your client can connect to. Open one known frame and confirm the returned content before using it for implementation.
  • Use the separate Claude Code guide for the client’s connection and verification steps.

Separate read context and canvas actions

Design context includes layout, components and variables. Current remote capabilities also include writing native Figma content and bringing live UI into editable layers. Do not describe the whole service as read-only.

Choose the server and client

The recommended remote server uses mcp.figma.com/mcp and does not require the desktop app. The desktop server is a separate setup route. Follow the official client catalog rather than promising arbitrary MCP-client support.

Prepare a bounded design input

Use a specific file, frame and intended task. Record component mappings, project framework and accessible assets. Check current seat and operation limits before planning canvas edits; output still needs project review.

Read the frame and component context with Figma MCP, then use Playwright MCP on the implemented page to check layout and the main interaction at the target viewport.

A few more details

Does remote Figma MCP need the desktop app?

No. The official remote setup connects directly to Figma and authenticates with your Figma account.

Does extracting a frame guarantee production-ready code?

No. The agent still needs the codebase conventions and component mapping, followed by visual and behavioral review.
